Just one more reason to skip Royal Caribbean cruises, or any Caribbean cruise, for that matter…
A viral video shows a woman in a bikini and flowing red cover-up running down the dock, frantically waving her arms at the gigantic cruise ship as it slowly pulls out of the harbor. Beside her, a man clad in white and wearing a black backpack yells “Noooooooo,” after seeing that the ship’s door had been closed.
Cruise ship passengers get left behind every now and then, but this time, the unlucky traveler turned out to be a famous actress. After celebrating their wedding, Costa Rican actress Maria Gonzalez Roesch and her new hubby Alessandro Di Palma set sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise as part of their honeymoon. Little did they know that millions of people all over the world would end up gawking at the demise of their vacation, which ended abruptly, and much too soon.
Left behind by a Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship
After being caught on camera by passengers on the nearby Norwegian Bliss, the couple’s story went viral, although no one knew who they were at the time. Once Maria found out about the video, she took to Instagram to try to explain why she and her husband had arrived at the dock 45 minutes late. She said that the ship normally departed at 5:30 pm, and she had simply assumed that it would do so on that day as well. However, the cruise line had given them a notice announcing the change in itinerary— and they didn’t read it.
Later, Maria stated in interviews with news outlets in her home country that she and her husband were just chilling on the beach in Nassau that day, assuming the ship would leave the same time it always did. Only after arriving to see the boat pulling away from the dock did they realize the call time had changed to 3:30. After yelling, “hey, we’re here, please let us in,” at the crew, Maria and Alessandro realized their efforts were futile, and contacted immigration police.
After a quick phone call, the Symphony of the Seas sent a small boat back with all of the couple’s traveling documents. It arrived in about 40 minutes. With passports in hand, the honeymooners booked a flight to Miami, and boarded the plane in their swimwear. Eventually, they met up with the ship to collect their belongings.
“I went to buy some pijamas, a toothbrush, and we stayed in an apartment that they were renting (her friends in Miami),” she told news outlet crhoy.com.
What happens when someone misses their ship?
Royal Caribbean policy (as well as most cruise lines) states that ships won’t wait for passengers who don’t show up on time, unless they were on one of the ship’s sponsored excursions. If anyone misses a boarding call, they are responsible for any expenses incurred for being stranded. Sometimes, it’s possible for people to “catch up” with their ships at the next port of call, but they must do so at their own expense.
Obviously it’s not that hard to get back to your ship on time, but there’s always the risk of traffic or some other emergency messing up your plans and causing you to miss it. That’s just one more reason why you should skip the Caribbean cruise this year– and here are a few more…
