Each year, the United Nations releases a World Happiness Report.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, in partnership with the Ernesto Illy Foundation, compiles information from countries all over the world for the study.
The World Happiness Report is essentially a survey ranking 156 nations by how happy their inhabitants see themselves to be. It is based on a wide variety of factors. These factors include a country’s GDP per capita, social support for individuals, and healthy life expectancy at birth.
In addition, respondents are asked questions about their perceptions of corruption, and how free they feel to make life choices. Furthermore, the survey measured their emotional negativity and positivity.
Finally, after compiling all the scores and rankings together, experts ranked the 156 countries in order of how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. Nevertheless, the study left some nations out of the report entirely due to lack of data.
