There’s a reason why the Bahamas has long been one of the top places in the Caribbean for vacationers. It has some of the best beaches not only in the Caribbean, but in the entire world!
With over 700 islands, the Bahamas has beaches to spare, which means there are plenty of places for those who are looking for secluded, private sandy havens. So check out our list of the best beaches in the bahamas, and choose a few to include in your next Caribbean vacation.
Remember, if you want to get the best vacation experience in the Bahamas, avoid coming from February to April, commonly known as the Spring Break rush.
The Best Beaches in the Bahamas
Pink Sands Beach, Harbor Island
Have you ever tickled your toes in coral-pink sand? If you haven’t, it’s time to check out the rare rosy-hued shores of Pink Sands Beach on Harbor Island. The sand gets its color from millions of tiny broken pieces of coral and shells, and calcium carbonate particles left by foraminifera. Foraminifera are miniscule red and pink shelled organisms that live in surrounding coral reefs.
What makes it special:
It’s a true tropical paradise– the sand is some of the softest you’ll find, and cold drinks are available nearby so you can beat the heat. There are also horses to ride for the perfect photo op. This is definitely one to add to your bucket list (and then cross it off as soon as possible!)
Tahiti Beach, Elbow Cay, Great Abaco Island
You’ll fall in love instantly with this beach, known for its copious assortment of sea shells, sand dollars, and sea glass. It’s also a fantastic place to snorkel.
What makes it special:
This beach is almost never crowded because you can only get there on foot, by bike, or by boat. During low tide, you can walk out on a sandbar that stretches about a quarter mile out into the ocean. There’s also a floating snack barge that sells refreshing drinks in case you get thirsty.
Cabbage Beach, Nassau, New Providence Island
This is one of the more popular beaches in the Bahamian islands, for good reason. The water is so clear, it’s simply breathtaking. Don’t like getting seaweed twisted around your toes? This beach is completely seaweed free. Jet ski rentals offer you a unique way to explore the Caribbean Sea. Or, you can see some spectacular views from above, by renting a parasail.
What makes it special:
There’s something for everyone at this beach. If you’d rather escape the noise of the jet skis and craftsmen hawking their wares, simply head further down the beach. It’s quite spacious, and the shallow waters offer some easy snorkeling opportunities. You might find starfish, flounder, and mini crabs, and even a few jellyfish.
Cat Island, Out Islands
Cat Island affords some of the most secluded and best beaches in the Bahamas. Explore the amazing underground caverns at Mermaid Hole, or scour the sands for the beautiful conch shells that often wash up there.
What makes it special:
Its proximity to Mt. Alvernia means that a short hike will afford you some of the most stunning views on Cat Island. It is also the highest point in all of the Bahamian islands. At the top of this mount sits the Hermitage, a tiny monastery built in 1939. Father Jerome, an Australian priest, built it singlehandedly over the course of 7 years.
And as if that weren’t enough, you can also explore the ruins of Deveaux Mansion and Armbrister Plantation. So if you’re looking for a truly unique beach, head over to Cat Island.
Love Beaches, Long Island
The Love Beaches on Long Island live up to their name: you’ll fall in love with them! These beautiful sandy shores are a collection of four beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. There’s plenty to explore, and there’s plenty to love!
What makes them special:
Be sure to visit Erna’s Natural pool while you’re there. It’s a swimming hole formed by rocks at the water’s edge. In addition, these beaches are close to Dunmore Town, where you can find ancient historic churches.
Gaulding’s Cay Beach, Eleuthera
This beach makes our list of the best beaches in the Bahamas primarily because it’s secluded and remote, and notably close to the famous Glass Window Bridge of Eleuthera. The Bridge is one of the few places on earth where you can see exactly where the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean collide with the turquoise-hued Caribbean Sea.
What makes it special:
Its calm waters are perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming. The cay offers plenty of creatures to discover while snorkeling, and you’ll practically have the whole place to yourself. Pine trees offer plenty of shade. Once you head back on Queen’s Highway, make sure you stop at the breathtaking Glass Window Bridge! Just be careful while driving over this dangerously thin bridge, however. You wouldn’t want to be swept away by crashing waves!
Long Bay Beach, San Salvador Island
Long Bay Beach is last but not least on our list of the best beaches in the Bahamas. Famous for its reef with a 40 foot drop-off, this beach should be on every snorkeler’s bucket list. There is plenty of marine life to see in these pristine waters. This wonderful, peaceful beach is unspoiled by restaurants, resorts, and shops, so you’ll be able to enjoy nature as it was meant to be.
You can find Long Bay Beach on the southwest coast of San Salvador Island. A historical site called the Mexico Olympics Monument, a structure that once housed the Olympic flame as it traveled to Mexico City in 1968, is about 2 miles away.
What makes it special:
Supposedly, this beach is near the spot where Christopher Columbus landed on San Salvador Island in 1492. He couldn’t have chosen a more peaceful, beautiful place! You can find the Christopher Columbus monument about 2 miles from the beach, as well as the New World Museum about 5 miles away.
