The star surprised his server with a generous tip, writing “Happy New Year!” on the receipt.
Harry Styles may have spent just $472.50 on his bill while dining out with Adele and James Corden in St. Thomas, but he left a hefty tip of more than twice that amount.
The celebrities were vacationing together on the Caribbean island when they decided to dine at the Caribbean Fish Market on January 4th.
Shortly after they had left, a restaurant employee shared a picture of Harry’s bill on Instagram.
“Big ups to @harrystyles for taking care of Mr Big Life!” the employee, known as Yahya on Instagram, captioned the picture. He continued with,“@donniewahlberg you got the second worldwide response from Harry Styles all the way from St Thomas Virgin Islands with @j_corden and @adele. Happy new year guys!”
The receipt shows that Harry Styles tipped him $2020 USD and wrote a personal note, saying “Happy New Year!”
The employee also shared a few fun photos of servers posing with Corden and Styles, writing, “Great night with great peeps @j_corden @harrystyles! Salud!” and “@harrystyles being the best person he can ever be… @j_corden photobombing!??? For real?”
A great way to start the new year
While employees at the restaurant were shocked over the tip, they were more than grateful to be able to start the new year off with such a pleasant surprise. The Instagram post received thousands of likes and comments. Soon, the story was picked up by Good Morning America, ET, and People Magazine, as well as other news sites.
Styles and Corden were on vacation in St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands after having visited Anguilla with Adele. Styles and Adele have reportedly been friends for years and have been seen out together frequently. Styles, Corden, and Adele were all spotted relaxing on the beach together in Anguilla in early January.
Their Caribbean vacation has garnered special attention due to the fact that Adele is recently divorced and is flaunting a newly slimmer figure.
The “tip challenge”
Harry Styles’ tip may be the result of a “tip challenge” made famous by Donnie Wahlberg on January 1st, 2020. After eating a meal with wife Jenny McCarthy at an IHOP near their home in St. Charles, Illinois, the New Kids on the Block singer left a $2020 tip for their server. Their bill was just $78.45. After McCarthy posted a picture of the receipt on Instagram, People Magazine interviewed the recipient of the tip.
“I just started crying. I couldn’t believe it, I mean, who does that?” said Bethany Provencher, the IHOP server in the PEOPLE interview. “God put him there for a reason for me, and I know that. It’s the greatest thing to ever happen in my life.”
Other famously good celebrity tippers are Johnny Depp (known for tipping $4000 at a Chicago steakhouse) Tom Hanks, Bill Murray, Amy Schumer,and Taylor Swift.
The 2020 challenge began when Danielle Franzoni, a waitress at a Michigan restaurant, received a $2,020 tip on a $23 bill. Formerly homeless and a single mom, Franzoni decided to “pay it forward” with a $20.20 tip of her own.
